Stop-and-Go Devotional by Diane Stortz: Guest Post and Giveaway!

Any busy families or children’s ministry leaders out there? If so, you’ll want to check out this wonderful new devotional, by author Diane Stortz.

The Stop-and-Go Devotional , published by Tommy Nelson, offers 52 short, active devotions based on Bible stories, designed for busy families with preschoolers and primary-grade children. It’s a to-the-point, interactive devotional with bite-size teachings on how to follow God.

I’m thrilled to welcome Diane to my blog today, as she shares some ideas for helping busy families stay connected with God’s Word during the summer AND offers a three-book giveaway!

Welcome Diane…

Not long ago my daughter posted on social media, “PSA for all the moms out there. We have 29 days of school left. We can do this! Do not get weary! The end is near. Now get back in there and pack some lunches!”

Somehow the last weeks of school can seem busier than any other time of the year, and right now you might be anticipating the carefree, slowed-down summer days ahead. But summers can be busy too—with camps, swim lessons, VBS, vacations, visits from family and friends, sports practices, games and tournaments, and juggling work and child care schedules. Where are those lazy, hazy days of summer after all?

When our families are especially busy, we tend to focus on our children’s physical and mental development more than their spiritual growth. But our children are always growing spiritually. They’re either growing in true wisdom, as Jesus did (Luke 2:52) or they’re growing wise according to the values of the world.

It’s up to us to give our kids a biblical understanding of life. It’s up to us to plant God’s Word in their hearts.

And it doesn’t have to be hard, even throughout a summer filled with activity. Because summer activities give us plenty of opportunities to teach and remind our kids what God has said to help them grow in wisdom.

When you’re at the beach, the mountains, or in your own backyard, talk about who created the beauty of our world.

Does your child play a sport? As you recount the big game, thank God for his wonderful design of our bodies and the amazing things they can do.

Are you participating in a community cleanup event? Remind your child that Jesus lived a life of service and wants us to do the same.

Is VBS or a Bible camp in your summer plans? Point out to your child that learning to know God better pleases him greatly. He wants us to know him and follow his paths.

Will you spend special times with out-of-town family this summer? Relate your love for family members to the love God has for his family—all those who love and follow Jesus.

This summer, just bring Jesus into whatever you are doing, all summer long. “Devotions” with young children don’t have to happen all at once! Devotions for a busy family can mean a Bible story over breakfast, a conversation on the way to soccer practice later the next day, and a simple activity based on the story while you wait for the hamburgers to grill or a song to sing in the bathtub.

And if you need a tool to help you, check out my new book Stop-and-Go Devotional: 52 Devotions for Busy Families. Each devotion features

• a short, active Bible story,

• questions to think and talk about,

• a simple, fun activity, and

• a Bible verse and a prayer.

If you use the elements of one devotion at different times throughout the week, you’ll have enough devotional material to last throughout this summer and the next school year!
